Papa: "Yes, Tommy; and when that happens our three ages will add up to exactly twice as much as to-day." Tommy: "And supposing I was born before you, papa; and supposing mamma had forgot all about it, and hadn't been at home when I came; and supposing——" Mamma: "Supposing, Tommy, we talk about bed. Come along, darling. You'll have a headache." Now, if Tommy had been some years older he might have calculated the exact ages of his parents from the information they had given him. Can you find out the exact age of mamma? Note that ages might not be whole years, but some years and months.

  Answer:  The age of Mamma must have been 29 years 2 months; that of Papa, 35 years; and that of the child, Tommy, 5 years 10 months. Added together, these make seventy years. The father is six times the age of the son, and, after 23 years 4 months have elapsed, their united ages will amount to 140 years, and Tommy will be just half the age of his father.

• Let's talk about Phineas Gage, 1848. "The American Crowbar Case" - A rod went through his eye and through the frontal lobe. While he survived, his personality changed radically, to the extent that his friends and family did not recognize him as the same person.  

  

  What might be going on? Why do you think nothing else changed, but his behavior? If all parts of his brain were involved in everything, what would you expect to happen?
• Another example, Dr P (The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat) - Dr P was a musician, and developed a strange problem with his vision. He could see everything, but could not recognize faces. To recognize the face, he would rely on noticing a distinct feature, like a beard. When shown a rose, he described it as a manged red ball attached to the stick - however, he was able to recognize it when he smelled it. Once, he thought his shoe was his foot, and his foot was his shoe.

  
  

  What might be going on? What are the steps in recognition? If some specific part of his brain was damaged (as seen on MRI), what could you conclude?

• The other division - Left versus Right brain - Jill Taylor had a blood clot in left brain, and she could not make out details, like understanding numbers and details - she felt one with universe. Her right arm got paralyzed. What can we tell?
